NMIT has come together to respond to the current fuel supply disruption. We will continue to meet and plan throughout the fuel supply situation to ensure that all NMIT learners and kaimahi feel well supported.
The Government response is currently at Phase 1
At Phase 1, our focus is on keeping your classes running as usual and supporting all our learners, while being practical about travel and fuel use.
This is about keeping a watch on the fuel situation, staying calm and planning early rather than major change. NMIT leadership are working to make sure we are doing all we can to support our learners and staff during the current fuel supply situation.
At this stage, we are working on business as usual. If we get there, Phase 2 may mean some changes. Your tutor will communicate any changes to your learning clearly and in advance.
Phase 1 - Learner guidelines and support
Learning delivery should continue as planned wherever possible, with an aim to minimise disruption
Learners should continue to access library, academic, wellbeing and support services as usual
Managers and tutors will begin to work to identify learners and courses where being on campus or face-to-face learning is important
We will put thought and planning into some online or hybrid delivery
Some courses may choose to schedule options to reduce unnecessary travel. For example: grouping theory classes together on one day to allow online delivery and reduce the need to travel to campus every day
We acknowledge there is no one-size-fits-all approach: Tutors will plan their own arrangements with their learners.
If there is a change planned for your course, your tutor will let you know in advance.
We are aware of how hard it is for our learners to cover travel costs, especially at the moment due to the current fuel shortage and rising fuel prices. Learner support is a key focus for NMIT, particularly given the current fuel situation.
NMIT has a limited Manaaki Fund available for learners to support you during unexpected hardship, as well as our other existing learner support options.
Te Puna Manaaki is the dedicated support service for all ākonga Māori & Pasifika enrolled at NMIT.
Online delivery will only be considered where it won’t impact accessibility to learning. For example: staff and learners have access to devices and internet, and have the capability to access the online class
Tutors and learner support teams will begin to gently encourage learners to practice using online tools, and consider their home learning options. They will also begin to identify and talk to learners who do not have access to a home learning environment
Our Learner Success team is also starting to identify learners who don’t have access to an online / at home learning environment
We are also already identifying learners and courses whose success is at risk if, at any point, we need to shift significantly to online learning delivery.
We will factor all this input into our ongoing planning and discussions.
Transport support
NMIT is currently considering options for additional transport support for learners and staff.
The ideas and suggestions that we've received to date are included below and are under discussion onlyat this stage.
Bike racks provision
Scooter and motorbike parking
Carpooling and VIP parking for those who carpool
Channels for arranging carpooling and sharing transport cost-saving ideas
Provision of Bee cards for staff and students to help support the use of public transport
New NMIT bus routes (eg. Motueka to Nelson)
Use of fleet vehicles
We will keep you posted as things evolve.
NMIT will continue to monitor the fuel supply disruption situation. Regular updates will be communicated to all kaimahi and ākonga.
