Kia ora koutou, my name is Kenny and I am a third-year counselling student and member of the Manaaki Tauira counselling team.
After five years working in emergency services and spending time as a volunteer counsellor with Lifeline, I decided to follow the call to pursue life as a counsellor. It was then that I left Auckland to make my way to sunny Whakatū and start my studies at NMIT.
“Counselling is my true calling. I look forward to sharing the best parts of my personal and professional identity as we weave together the type of life you would like to be living.”
Professional and academic background
My experience as an emergency call taker and volunteer counsellor has given me strong problem-solving skills as well as the ability to weather all sorts of storms. These and other experiences have left me with high levels of empathy and a strong ability to relate to people and their stories.
Counselling Approach
Some key aspects of myself which I will bring to our work together include:
- A resolutely unjudgmental nature
- Strong collaborative skills
- A sense of humour
- A firm belief in your innate strengths.
“My particular professional interest lies with narrative therapy and person-centred counselling. This involves us working together to explore what may be keeping you stuck, and uncovering your preferred ways to move into the future.”
Interest/hobbies
Outside of study, I value being outside and spending time with people close to me. I enjoy creative writing, reading, and gaming to pass the time.
Counselling in today’s world
Underpinning my practice as a counsellor is a commitment to the auspices of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the New Zealand Association of Counsellors Code of Ethics
