It is common practice at NMIT to welcome manuhiri (visitors / guests), kaimahi (staff) and ākonga (students) in a formal and traditional welcoming ceremony.
The intention of the mihi whakatau at NMIT is to welcome you and celebrate the beginning or continuation of your learning journey.
It is rich with symbolism and follows a special process ultimately uniting two separate groups: tangata whenua (hosts) and manuhiri (guests), together as one.
Whilst parts of a mihi whakatau may vary according to the occasion, Māori language remains a key feature.

Have you accepted your enrolment?
If you've received a confirmation letter but haven't replied yet, be sure to accept your place.
- If you applied online, you can confirm your place via MyNMIT(external link)
- Otherwise, email your signed Secure Your Enrolment form to enrolments@nmit.ac.nz

Get your very own student ID card
To get your very own student ID card, head over to the Information and Enrolments office at the Nelson Campus, or the administration office at the Marlborough Campus. Our friendly staff will print your card on the spot!
