Sally Williams has always had a love for horticulture — from gardening and food production to landscape design and environmental sustainability.
However, her career started in the education sector as a primary school teacher in her homeland of England.
After moving to New Zealand in 2003, Sally continued teaching for six years before pursuing her passion for horticulture.
She studied Horticulture and Landscape Design at the Manukau Institute of Technology before working in the industry in a range of roles from retail to landscape design and garden maintenance.
Sally also had an interest in adult learning and gained a New Zealand Certificate in Adult Literacy and Numeracy.
“I was then able to combine two loves — horticulture and working alongside adults on their learning journey,” Sally says.
In 2021, Sally started at NMIT as a tutor assistant on the New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture programme.
She takes a student-centred approach to teaching and learning with a focus on having fun.
“If we don't enjoy our learning experience then we are less likely to learn.”
Sally works closely with adult learners who have dyslexia and has been developing her knowledge of this learning style through study and experience.
